If you insist upon a luxury hotel or cruise, in a prime location, then Greece is expensive. If you are prepared to lower your sights a little, and put in some effort, you can acquired a budget holiday and enjoy a great experience than sitting on a busy beach for two weeks. Greece offers much more than the stereotypical beach holiday, and a couple can get by on 50 ? 90 Euros, with a little preparation and thrift. This year, it looks like the airlines are dropping prices to draw customers, so 2009 must be a great time to take advantage.
If you visit Greece and stick to the traditional places, like Athens, Santorini and Mykonos, the bill soon builds up. Cut out the middleman by preparing your own flights and accommodation, and keep away from the package tours and cruises. Arrange your own medical insurance, and you will save a lot of money and unnecessary expenditure and provide a plethora of interesting sites for very small money. Budget travel in Greece needs a little extra work however can save hundreds of dollars.
Food can vary wildly in Greece; however it is guaranteed to be very expensive near the tourist spots. Usually, you will come across restaurants with waiters standing outside, trying to attract you in. Avoid these places ? they are usually very expensive and the food is not more often than not great, surely not the real Greek food. You are searching for a Taverna rather than an Estiatorio (restaurant). The latter is usually overpriced and serves precisely the same food, however in a classier surrounding, for which you pay a premium.
